Where: start at Wanling Plaza 1F万菱广场一楼 on Yide Road. Stalls there list friction and pull-back cars and will sell one piece. Then try Yide International and the street stalls for display-box friction cars, and Haizhu Market for transforming cars.
When: go 30 Oct – 4 Nov 2026, when Canton Fair Phase 3 (toys) is on. For a cheaper trip without the fair, go 9–20 Nov.
Shenzhen: it has no friction-toy market, so give it one day at most. Friction toys are made in Chenghai and resold in Guangzhou.

Everything below is within walking distance around Yide Lu and Haizhu Square metro stations (Yuexiu). Wholesale stalls trade about 9:00–18:00 and are calmest on weekday mornings.

Guangzhou is the easiest place for walk-in single pieces, but not the first to get new friction designs. Nearly every top friction model on 1688 comes from Chenghai factories, and new designs reach Yide Road stalls weeks later.

Factories bring next year's lines to the late-October fairs. The new samples then stay in the markets until mid-January. Spring (Shenzhen Toy Fair, May Canton Fair) is the second window.

The autumn fair samples are in the markets by then, and hotels are back to normal prices. Diwali is about 8 Nov, so start on the 9th.
Budget for samples
20-design kit:¥320–500 ≈ ₹4,600–7,200, fits in one carry-on.
Going wide (100 designs × 3):¥5,100–5,900 ≈ ₹73,000–84,000. That's about 25–40 kg, so budget an extra checked bag.
Buy one piece per design unless the mould differs. Colourways usually share the same mould and gearbox.

Pre-register free as a Canton Fair buyer at buyer.cantonfair.org.cn. It issues the invitation letter for an M (business) visa.
Apply for the China visa: 4–7 working days, single entry ~₹2,900 plus the service-centre fee until 31 Dec 2026. Indian passports don't qualify for visa-free or 240-hour transit entry.
Book hotels near Haizhu Square / Yide Road, not Pazhou. Pazhou hotels cost 2–3× more during the fair.

Ask for one piece, then test it before you pay
The 一件 trap: in wholesale markets 一件 often means one carton. Say 一个 (one piece) or 样品 (sample).

Test before paying
Push it 20 cm: a good friction car rolls 2–3 m.
Listen for gears slipping or grinding.
Flip-test stunt cars: they should run on both faces.
Crash-test transforming cars twice, to check the latch resets.
Habits that pay off
Log two prices per sample: one piece and one carton. The carton price is what your competitors pay.
Stalls with new designs often refuse photos. Buying the sample is the accepted way to take a design home.
Add good vendors on WeChat. Many post new arrivals daily in 朋友圈 (Moments).
Pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to an Indian card, and carry some RMB cash.
Gearbox samples: none were found on sale at Yide Road stalls. The quickest way to get some is to buy 3–5 of the cheapest ¥1–5 friction cars and take them apart. On 1688 they cost ¥0.13–1 each: friction 惯性牙箱, pull-back 回力牙箱, double tumble 双惯性翻滚车牙箱, press 按压牙箱, spark 打火石牙箱. Some listings are marked 一件代发, meaning they sell single pieces.
Shenzhen
One day at most: there's no friction-toy market
Shenzhen only resells Chenghai friction toys inside general toy markets. It is worth a day only for price checks, or as your way in if you fly via Hong Kong.

Central Shenzhen's only real toy wholesale market. Toys are on 3F–4F: model cars, a die-cast shop and dinosaurs. It sells both retail and wholesale. Plastic friction cars are likely but not confirmed. Allow half a day.

Chenghai: where friction toys are made
Chenghai (Shantou) has made friction and pull-back toys since the 1980s. Nearly every top-selling friction model on 1688 comes from Shantou or Chenghai factories. New friction designs appear first in its showrooms and reach Guangzhou's stalls later. It's 1 h 52 min by train from Guangzhou East, ¥210–283 ≈ ₹3,000–4,000.
